Public Input Continues For Residential Lots
WHITEHORSE – The City of Whitehorse is tasked with planning for growth within municipal boundaries through policies set out in the 2010 Official Community Plan (OCP). The OCP sets out areas for future residential development and sets policy for how and when development should occur. In an effort to provide housing opportunities for a growing community, the City and Yukon government have identified potential development parcels in various neighbourhoods.
Phase one of this project included preliminary consultation on 13 potential development parcels across the city. The City gathered input on how residents used the areas, what they valued, and what type of development might be acceptable. Following the consultation, the City prepared a “What We Heard” document which summarized the input gathered. A technical background report was also completed.
Based on the technical review and public input, the City determined that 10 of the 13 sites were feasible for development. Preliminary lot layouts have been created and the City is looking for public input on the new detailed information.
“The City understands that our citizens value their local greenspace and we are working to find the best approach for integrating new development into existing neighbourhoods,” said City Planner, Kinden Kosick. “Input from this phase of the project will be used to help draft a zoning amendment bylaw and final lot designs for Council decision to proceed or not.”
The City is once again collecting input on this new detailed information through an online survey. The survey and background information can be accessed at www.whitehorse.ca/housinglots. In addition, any further comments can be emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org. The survey and comment period will close October 23rd at 12 noon.
