City Launches New Parks & Recreation Master Plan

Post Date:02/12/2018

WHITEHORSE – The City of Whitehorse is launching the 2018 Parks and Recreation Master Plan this Valentine’s Day with a month-long community engagement campaign that taps into the passion local residents and groups have for their leisure activities.

“This is a town that loves its parks and recreation, and we thought it would be fun to showcase that and get our staff in on it with heart-themed t-shirts,” says Krista Mroz, Manager of Recreation and Facility Services and one of the project co-leads.

The City’s biennial Citizen Survey consistently shows that Whitehorse residents have high expectations where parks and recreation are concerned.

“City staff see this plan as an opportunity to not only look forward but also reflect on why we do what we do, and how far we’ve come,” says project co-lead Douglas Hnatiuk, Manager of Parks and Community Development.

Over the next month, the City and its consultant planning team will be reaching out in a variety of ways to better understand how residents are using existing facilities and services, what’s working well, and what areas the City needs to focus more on. The City encourages residents and community groups to get involved in the process by:

  1. Filling out an online survey (for both members of the public and recreation groups) from February 14 to March 15;
  2. Participating in installations at the Canada Games Centre from February 14 to March 15;
  3. Attending the Parks & Rec “Jam” at the Old Firehall on Wednesday, February 28th (public drop-in from 11:30 am -1:30 pm and 3:30-7:30 pm and focus group discussions from 8:45-11:15 am and 1:45-3:00 pm)

Visit www.whitehorse.ca/parksrecplan for more information about the project and how to get involved.
