WHITEHORSE – Today’s community cleanup was a huge success. There was a tremendous turnout in response to the City’s challenge.

A whopping 1,750 kilograms of litter and garbage were cleaned up from Whitehorse properties, alleyways and greenbelts. Yukon government collected 650 kilograms, the City of Whitehorse collected 600 kilograms, and the Whitehorse business community collected just over 500 kilograms.

“The City congratulates Yukon government for winning,” said Mayor Dan Curtis. “The Whitehorse Chamber of Commerce brought the business community out in full force and won the inaugural Champion Sorters award, graciously donated by Lumel Studios. Our city is already looking cleaner and greener thanks to today’s efforts and it was great to see so many people getting involved and taking pride in our community.”

The Champion Sorters award was created for the team that diverted the most waste from our landfill.

The City has promoted spring cleanup events for over 20 years and it gets bigger and better every year. This is one of many steps the City is taking towards a more environmentally sustainable community.
