Approximately 90% of the waste Whitehorse landfills is coming from two sectors, the Institutional, Commercial, Industrial and Construction & Demolition sectors.
Waste is a natural byproduct of selling goods and services, but majority of that waste should not be landfilled. Typical everyday stuff includes regular waste, cardboard and organic waste. Some businesses also have other types of waste that needs to be regularly handled, such as hazardous waste, electronic waste, scrap metal, construction and demolition waste, etc.

In July 2016 the City of Whitehorse surveyed the business community on proposed changes to the Waste Management Bylaw. A total of 159 responses were received.
