The City is taking action to reduce the mosquito population in and around Whitehorse through its annual Mosquito Control Program.
The program, which begins in April every year and runs until October, uses a bacterium-containing larvicide. This bacterium is specific in its control of mosquitos and biting flies. It does not reproduce in the environment, and has no effect on non-target insects, fish, birds or mammals, including humans, livestock and pets. The program targets mosquito habitats such as swamps, marshes, shallow ponds, non-flowing ditches, and snowmelt in depressions.
Residents can reduce these mosquito habitats and development sources on their own properties by removing standing water, and regularly draining and refilling wading pools, livestock watering troughs and birdbaths.
If the bugs are getting to you, you can reduce the likelihood of a bite in a number of ways:
- Ensure window screens are in good condition.
- Wear loose, light coloured clothing.
- Be aware of outdoor activities near landscaped areas, marshes, ponds, lake margins and forested or overgrown areas where mosquitos may rest.
- Consider using insect repellent.
