The City of Whitehorse is introducing weekly household hazardous waste (HHW) disposal days to residents starting February 3rd, 2024.
Over the years, the City has seen a steady increase in both participation and the amount of hazardous material diverted from the landfill. This change will ensure household hazardous waste is disposed of properly and builds on the City’s continued efforts to divert materials from the landfill into their appropriate waste streams including compost, recyclables, and construction and demolition waste.
Starting this year, residents will be able to dispose of their household hazardous waste for free, every Saturday from 9 am – 4 pm at the Whitehorse Waste Management Facility (6 km north of downtown at Mile 919.72 Alaska Highway).
HHW materials include liquid paint, motor oil and their containers, solvents, gasoline, BBQ starter, anti-freeze, household cleaning products, compact fluorescent light bulbs, household and car batteries, pesticides, aerosol cans and other containers under pressure such as bear spray and propane canisters. Commercial hazardous waste is not accepted and regular tipping fees apply for all non-HHW waste.
Key Facts:
- Increased drop-off frequency: from 2 events/annually to every Saturday from 9 am to 4 pm
- HHW days provide residents with free, safe disposal of household hazardous waste material
- Dropped-off material should be properly labelled/identifiable
