The City of Whitehorse has released the results of its Free Fare Transit Study.
The study included feedback from more than 900 Whitehorse residents, First Nations governments, community groups, and nonprofit organizations and an analysis of free fare programs in other jurisdictions.
The study found that transit users would be best served by buses that come more frequently and reliably, especially during peak travel times. It also found that without those elements in place, free fares would have little benefit to transit users. Service improvements also offer the highest potential for increased ridership.
Going forward, the City will continue to invest in its transit system as planned by increasing the number of buses in its fleet by 25%, increasing service hours by 35% (including Sundays, holidays, and peak travel times), and route improvements.
February 2024 saw the third highest ridership in Whitehorse transit history, demonstrating the important role of transit. The City remains committed to prioritizing transit investments, ensuring accessibility, reliability, and frequency for our ridership.
