Arctic Backhoe Services has been awarded a $1.7 million contract for the demolition of the City’s Municipal Services Building, 4210 Fourth Avenue.
The Municipal Services Building is at the end of its useful life. It has been slated for demolition since the City’s Whitehorse Operations Building opened in 2020 at 187 Range Road.
The demolition work is set to begin this month and the building will be removed by the end of the year. The site will then be prepared for future development in 2025.
Following a public hearing, City Council recently approved a rezoning of the property to increase the maximum building height to 30 metres and ensure the redevelopment of the site includes residential use.
Quotes:
“The Municipal Services Building has long been a key part of the City’s operations and a fixture of the downtown core. With the new Whitehorse Operations Building in operation, it is time to prepare this site for new development that will meet the needs of our growing city. By rezoning the site to include some commercial but mostly residential use and increasing the allowable building height, we hope to encourage higher density residential development in our downtown.”
– Whitehorse Mayor Laura Cabott
“It is good to see the Municipal Services Building making way for new development and residential use. This demolition marks the end of an era and opens the door to a vibrant space that will serve our growing community. It’s a significant step toward building a brighter future for everyone.”
– Yukon Member of Parliament Brendan Hanley on behalf of Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Sean Fraser
