This year, the City has more equipment and staff than ever on hand for snow and ice control in Whitehorse.
An increase to the 2023-2024 budgets allowed us to add a dozen new pieces of equipment to our fleet, including:
2 graders
2 loaders
2 dump trucks
2 skid steers
2 small dump trucks
1 tractor
1 end-dump trailer
This brings our total transportation winter maintenance fleet to 8 graders, 8 loaders, 12 dump trucks and highway tractors, and 10 pieces of smaller equipment, like skid steers and small tractors for clearing trails, bus stops, sidewalks and other areas.
Budget increases have also allowed for 12 new staff to help with snow removal, bringing the total crew size to more than 50 people covering day and night shifts throughout the winter.
In addition to this increased capacity, we have also established agreements with local contractors to ensure we can receive help quickly in response to major snow events.
We maintain around 600 km of roadways across the city. We clear snow in order of priority and work to ensure the city is safe and accessible for all residents.
You can find the priority designation of roadways and trails in the City’s Snow and Ice Control Policy. You can find maps of city neighbourhoods online at whitehorse.ca/snow.
We remind residents to be prepared for winter and drive to conditions. Please go slow when you see crews and equipment at work and make sure to give them space to do work safely.
