Chimney Fire Safety

Post Date:02/03/2021 3:12 PM

Whitehorse – The Whitehorse Fire Department would like to remind residents of the importance of inspecting and cleaning their wood stove chimneys to prevent chimney fires.

Over the last several months, a number of Whitehorse homes have sustained severe damage due to chimney fires. The cause of these fires was determined to be connected to one or more of the following:

  • Failing to install the chimney in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions;
  • Improper maintenance or failing to have the chimney regularly inspected by a professional.

Any of these factors can result in the transfer of heat from the chimney to a combustible material in the attic; a space not normally protected by a smoke detector.

If you use a solid fuel appliance (i.e. wood) to heat your home, it is highly recommended to:

  • Have your chimney inspected by a professional for proper installation and clearance to combustibles, and
  • Maintain and service it regularly.

All installations of solid fuel fired appliances in residential structures within Yukon must be done under permit and be inspected prior to initial use.

Protect yourself, your family and property by having your heating system inspected and maintained today.
