Effective April 1, 2025, loads at the City’s Waste Management Facility will be charged by weight, including small residential loads.
All vehicles will be weighed upon entry and exit of the facility to determine the applicable fee.
New rates for disposing of waste coming into effect on April 1, include:
– Household waste – $132.50 per tonne (approximately $0.06 per pound)
– Residential recyclable materials – $132.50 per tonne
– Organics, brush and clean wood – $72.50 per tonne (approx. $0.03 per pound)
– Construction waste, metals and bulky items – $143.00 per tonne (approx. $0.07 per pound)
– Mattresses – $20 surcharge in addition to weighed fee (construction waste, metals and bulky items)
– Fridges, freezers and other Freon appliances – $50.00 surcharge in addition to weighed fee (construction waste, metals and bulky items)
– Mixed loads will be charged the highest applicable fee
– Waste loads and mixed loads under 45 kilograms (100 pounds) will be charged a minimum fee of $6.00
– No minimum fee applies for recyclables or organics if they are brought separately
Residents can still dispose of their household hazardous waste for free, if brought separately, every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Residents can expect a slight change in the cost of a typical load depending on what it includes. For example, at current rates, a load of 8 bags of household waste costs $12 to dispose. If that load of 8 bags weighs less than 90kg (200lbs), it will cost less to dispose under the new rates.
Fees on residential recyclable materials will only remain in effect until the launch of the Yukon’s Extended Producer Responsibility program for packaging and paper products on November 1, 2025, after which the City’s temporary recycling programs are scheduled to end.
Updated fees are being implemented to achieve fee consistency across all users and support the City’s Waste Management Cost Recovery Policy. All costs of providing solid waste services are recovered through user fees rather than City property taxes. A full list of updated tipping fees can be found at whitehorse.ca/wasteservices.
