Hot temperatures and dry conditions can cause out of control fires to spread quickly, so the City of Whitehorse is urging everyone to be fire safe.
Before you have a fire, check the latest fire conditions at Yukon.ca. Conditions can change quickly, so always make sure there is no fire ban in effect.
Open burning within City limits is only permitted in campgrounds and approved backyard fire pits. Always extinguish campfires before leaving them – soak, stir, and repeat until cold to the touch. Never leave a fire unattended, and take extra caution when using motorized vehicles in the backcountry because even a hot exhaust could ignite dry brush and tinder.
The City of Whitehorse Fire Department will also be patrolling high-traffic areas over the weekend and promoting fire safety awareness.
