Safety on Transit
Your safety is our number one priority.
If you see something, say something – report any unusual behaviour or incidents to a uniformed transit employee.
If you’re in immediate danger, call 9-1-1.
Passengers are expected to follow the Passenger Code of Conduct. Our drivers are expected to follow the Driver Code of Conduct.
In the event of a safety concern – the driver’s procedure is to:
- Stop the bus as soon as possible and not move until the situation is resolved
- Not get into a physical altercation
- Ask the person(s) in question to cease their actions or:
- Warn them with removal from the bus and/or
- Call for the RCMP to remove them
- Continue route service once the situation is resolved
- Write up an incident report of the event at end of shift
- Transit leadership reviews the following morning
As a passenger, you can submit a report to transit following an incident. Please include:
- Date and time of incident
- Bus number/route
- Where you got on and off the bus
Please report incidents to [email protected] and/or 668-8396.
What does follow-up by Transit look like if they receive a report?
- We review security footage
- Review other reports, if connected to this incident
- Contact and cooperate with RCMP
- If an incident is severe enough, the City can warn or ban person(s) from transit services
Remember that safety is a shared responsibility, and your actions can contribute to a safer and more enjoyable transit experience for all passengers.
- Passengers are expected to treat staff and other passengers with courtesy and respect at all times.
- Skis, snowboards, rollerblades, skates, and other sharp objects must be carried in a bag (not worn).
- Passengers will be allowed to carry on bulky articles provided that they do not inconvenience other passengers.
- Passengers are not allowed to carry any explosive materials, flammable materials, or firearms on board a bus.
- Only guide dogs or animals in carriers are allowed on the bus.
- Passengers are required to use headphones with all audio devices.
- Blocking aisles is not allowed at any time.
- Passengers may bring on two children under the age of four free of charge. The adult will pay the regular adult rate only.
- For safety reasons, passengers with small children are asked to exit from the front of the bus.
- Bikes will only be allowed on the bus when the bike rack is full and if there is room on the bus.
- Eating or littering on the bus is not allowed.
- If priority seating is needed for passengers using mobility aids, other passengers are required to move.
- Passengers must be reasonably clean and able to care for themselves while on the bus at all times.
- Graffiti and vandalism are strictly prohibited.
- Passengers will be refused service if they:
– Extend any part of their body or any object out an open window.
– Purposely distracting the driver in any way.
– Any practice that would annoy or embarrass other passengers – like shouting or swearing.
– Consume alcohol, use drugs, smoke or vape while on the bus.
– Are not prepared to board or de-board the bus in an appropriate manner.
– Do not pay full fare.
The driver will:
- Treat passengers with courtesy and respect at all times.
- Collect the appropriate fare.
- Provide instructions, directions, and a safe, comfortable ride.
- Enforce the Passenger Code of Conduct.
- Ensure appropriate behavior of passengers. Refuse service to those who violate the Passenger Code of Conduct.
- Adhere to the established schedule within the limits of safety and road conditions.
- Assist passengers with mobility aids on and off the bus as requested.
The driver will not:
- Make stops between bus stops (except for safety reasons).
- Wait or stop again for late passengers.
- Drive ahead of schedule.
- Express personal views on issues related to the service.
- Put the safety of the passengers at risk.
- Talk to passengers while driving.
- Wait until all passengers are seated.
- Provide any passenger with their full name. Drivers are required to provide only their first name and bus number.
- Assist passengers on and off the bus for convenience.
