Recyclables
The City collects mixed rigid containers, mixed paper, and cardboard for recycling.
Curbside Recycling begins December 3, 2024 for eligible households. If you are currently receiving Curbside Collection – i.e., you have a black cart for garbage and a green cart for compost – you will receive two blue bins and yellow bags in the coming weeks. Find out more about Curbside Collection here.
Our Recycling Depot is located at the Waste Management Facility. Country-residential and multi-family residences, as well as small businesses can bring their recyclables to the Depot. Residents can drop off non-refundable recycling for $1 per bag/container (maximum 90 litres per bag/container).
Bring your refundable recyclables such as cans, bottles, milk jugs, and other beverage containers to a local depot for a refund.
Bring glass (clean, lids removed), electronic waste, metals, textiles and batteries to Raven ReCentre for no charge.
Note: Styrofoam is not recyclable in Whitehorse. Please place styrofoam with garbage.
Click here to view the Recycling Sorting Guide for the depot.
Waste is subject to tipping fees. Fees and descriptions are listed in our Fees & Charges Bylaw.
Controlled Waste
Controlled Waste must be sorted and separated before disposal. See the tipping fee list for the fees to dispose of these items.
Check out the sorting guides on this page if unsure where to put your controlled waste.
Banned Waste
Some waste is banned from the Waste Management Facility. However, some types of banned waste do have local disposal options.
Check out the sorting guides on this page if you are unsure where to put your banned waste.
Residents can dispose of their household hazardous waste (HHW) for free, every Saturday from 9 am to 4 pm at the Waste Management Facility.
HHW materials include liquid paint, motor oil and their containers, solvents, gasoline, BBQ starter, anti-freeze, household cleaning products, compact fluorescent light bulbs, household and car batteries, pesticides, aerosol cans and other containers under pressure such as bear spray and propane canisters.
For a full list of items, visit yukon.ca/en/dispose-hazardous-waste.
Dropped off material should be properly labeled and identifiable. Commercial hazardous waste is not accepted and regular tipping fees apply for all non-HHW waste.
Try our What Goes Where app for help finding local disposal options, to receive residential collection reminders, and more!
When it comes to sorting our waste, nobody enjoys the guessing game. Our What Goes Where app makes sorting your waste a snap!
Search for an item and we’ll give you local options for recycling, composting, or disposal. If you can’t find a given item, check back soon, as the list is continuously updated.
This year’s Clean-up Days are May 16 to 20, 2024.
During Clean-up Days, residential tipping fees are waived on these sorted items:
- Garbage
- Food and yard waste
- Construction and demo waste
- Mattresses and box-springs
Fees are waived on loads from a car, pick-up truck or small utility trailer.
Tipping fees still apply for metals, appliances, and all commercial loads. E-waste should be taken to Raven ReCentre. This includes TVs, computer equipment, fax machines, copy equipment, etc.

The City’s compost facility has been producing a superior product and defying beliefs that composting north of 60° is difficult or even impossible. Our compost meets the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) standard, making it approved for use in organic operations.
Note: A friendly reminder that what you feed your Green Cart helps us produce our OMRI-certified compost! Please keep contaminants out!
