September 30 is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
This day is an important opportunity to reflect on the dark history of treatment of Indigenous people in Canada, and the work that needs to be done individually and collectively to bring about a brighter future for all Canadians.
It is a time to focus on advancing Reconciliation in our own lives and to learn the truth of residential schools and how historical events have impacted and continue to impact Indigenous families and communities in the Yukon and throughout Canada.
Learning about Canada’s colonial history and the intergenerational impacts of residential schooling, and working together to advance Reconciliation, is important on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, but also throughout the year.
Whitehorse is located on the Traditional Territories of the Ta’an Kwäch’än Council and the Kwanlin Dün First Nation, and the City of Whitehorse is committed to working with First Nations Governments to better recognize the important role Indigenous people have in our community.
We encourage all residents to participate in local events on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation that will bring people together to foster understanding, healing, and collaboration as we move forward on the path of Reconciliation.
